You know how your city streets have been under construction for what seems like years? Once one project is finished and you get to drive the newly paved road, the frustration from the years of traffic cones and manual stop signs dissipates. It is you and that new road. Smooth sailing.
Then a few miles away, a new project has begun. Your usual route to work is now victim to the men and women in neon suits. You curse under your breath. It is not the end of the world by any means, but you are confused as to how there is ALWAYS some road that needs fixing.
Well, I hate to break the news to you, but our brains work very similarly. Our thoughts and feelings, to be a bit more specific, require *a lot* of attention and maintenance. Some part of your life is under construction, you work hard to ride that smooth, safe road. You get there. You smile for half a second. Then boom. New and necessary construction presents itself.
When I find myself forlorn about how life feels like a relentless game of catch up, fix up, heal it, mend it, and move on to the next task- I have a few reminders that I like to come back to.
They don’t fix the roads, but they help calm me amongst the chaos of construction. So, here they are for you, too:
- The way you feel right now is temporary. No matter how good you feel, or how terrible your dark hole of despair is, both are temporary. You will not feel this way forever. What a blessing and a curse. But mostly a blessing.
- You are not your job. Your job is… a job, you are far more significant than the tasks you complete or don’t complete.
- On that note, your life’s work might have nothing to do with your day job. Your life’s work has way more to do with how you show up, who you keep growing into, and how you choose to love.
- Some flowers aren’t meant to bloom and you may never know why. It doesn’t mean you won’t make beautiful bouquets. Your life is just being picky about what your bouquet will look like.
- It is normal to grieve the seemingly mundane. We don’t talk about it enough, but you are allowed to grieve old chapters, places, people, etc. even if you know that moving forward is what is best for you.
- Time doesn’t alway heal, but spending your lifetime understanding who you are and becoming reallyyyyyy good friends with your self might.
- Love (in any form) that only hurts you or makes you question everything is not love.
- Having uncomfortable conversations is hard, but not having them is harder.
- When pain is deep, you will have to let it go many, many times.
- Allow yourself the freedom to enjoy the small things and the big things. The things you enjoy don’t have to make sense to anyone but you.
